This is how synthetic ascorbic acid is made:

1.    Genetically modified corn (GMO) is processed into simple corn syrup.
2.    Hydrolysis – the simple corn syrup (D-Glucose) is broken down by heat and enzymes.
3.    Fermentation – D-Sorbitol is converted to L-Sorbose
4.    Acetonation – acetone (that’s the same acid as used in nail polish remover) is combined with L-Sorbose
5.    Hydrogenation – the D-Glucose is converted to D-Sorbitol
6.    Oxidation – the product is oxidized with a catalyst, acidified again, washed and dried to from L-Gluconic acid.
7.    Hydrolysis – L-Gluconic acid is treated with hydrochloric acid and is processed to form a crude ascorbic acid.
8.    Recrystallization –final step, the crude ascorbic acid is filtered and milled to a fine crystalline powder and sold to vitamin companies who market it as vitamin C.

Note: It may be a surprise to learn that almost all vitamin C supplements on the market are ascorbic acid. But even more disturbing is that the FDA allows synthetic ascorbic acid to be labeled as vitamin C.
